Miguel Ángel Gallardo, former Secretary General of the PSOE in Extremadura and socialist candidate in the last regional elections, has resigned this Wednesday from his seat as a deputy in the regional Assembly, a decision that entails the loss of his privileged status.
The resignation was communicated through a message addressed to the Steering Committee of the PSOE of Extremadura, in which Gallardo explained that he is "stepping aside" to calmly face the legal proceedings scheduled to take place in May before the Provincial Court of Badajoz. This trial is related to alleged irregular hirings in the Badajoz Provincial Council, where David Sánchez, brother of the President of the Government, is also implicated.
This very morning I have communicated to the Provisional Commission of the PSOE of Extremadura my resignation from the seat of deputy in the Assembly.

It has been an honor to serve and share so many years of commitment, effort, and learning alongside so many wonderful people. But today I am stepping aside… pic.twitter.com/sYR8qDG3CP
Gallardo had already resigned as leader of the regional PSOE after the party's historic poor performance in the **December 21, 2025** elections, which left the **PSOE in its worst position in decades to make way for an "internal reconstruction."**
By renouncing his seat, Gallardo loses the judicial protection offered by his privileged status and the case will be handled by ordinary courts, which, in the opinion of the former socialist leader himself, will allow him to fully focus on his defense and “protect his dignity and family peace,” according to the statement he released.
The decision also clears up doubts about possible rumors that he might seek another position to maintain procedural immunity, something Gallardo has vehemently denied.
ThePSOE of Extremadura has expressed its respect for the decision and has underlined that it is a personal choice made after the electoral defeat and at a time of transition for the party in the region.
