The former president of the Generalitat and leader of JuntsCarles Puigdemont, celebrated this Thursday the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) to endorse the amnesty law, although he called for caution regarding the practical consequences that the ruling may have.

Through a message on social media, Puigdemont defined the European ruling as "a resounding victory, a political triumph for independence against the powers of the State", considering that it supports the legality of the norm promoted to end the judicial proceedings derived from the procés.

However, the pro-independence leader urged not to fall into euphoria because, in his opinion, "the path to end repression has not ended". In that sense, he warned that the battle now moves to Spain: "Now the game is not played in Europe but in the Bernabéu, with the referees and the public leaning to one side", in allusion to the actions of the Spanish courts.

Finally, Puigdemont insisted that the objective of the independence movement remains the secession of Catalonia and defended that the end of judicial repression should serve to regain political strength. "We need repression to end not for personal benefit (...) but to be able to regain strength and resources to focus on the main objective, which is the independence of Catalonia", he concluded.
