The union leader Afra Blanco starred in an intervention on laSexta Xplica this Saturday in which she defended the separation of powers and criticized what she considers a political drift that invades the judicial terrain. Her message revolved around the idea that democracy only works if each institution respects its competencies.
Blanco warned that “when politicians come out to condemn prematurely, to point fingers at judges or to anticipate judicial decisions, they are supplanting a power that does not belong to them”. In that sense, she insisted that there are “three powers that have the obligation to guarantee a democracy” and that each one must limit itself to its function.
The collaborator also underlined the importance of the presumption of innocence and warned that turning judicial processes into a political battle can “deteriorate the credibility of the system”. Furthermore, she denounced the impact of leaks and cross-declarations on the public perception of justice.
Blanco distributed criticism between PSOE and PP, pointing out that it is just as questionable “not giving explanations and pointing fingers at judges” as any other strategy of pressure on the judiciary. Her intervention, widely commented on social media, has reopened the debate on the limits between politics and justice in the public sphere.
