The journalist Javier Ruiz has responded forcefully to the accusations launched by former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo about alleged leaks and a personal relationship between them. Villarejo insinuated an alleged past friendship between them, something that Ruiz has flatly denied from the program Mañaneros 360, where he has assured that these statements are part of a strategy to “divert attention”.

The presenter explained that the former commissioner has recently leaked a 2017 conversation which, as he himself admits, he barely remembered. In that context, Ruiz detailed that Villarejo tried to influence media coverage by asking him to reflect his version of certain events. However, the journalist was clear in marking distances, denouncing that the former commissioner's objective is “for all the press to draw”, mixing those who collaborated with him with those who, as he defended, have never been part of his schemes. Some of us have not worked for Villarejo, we have not been paid by Villarejo, we have not lied for Villarejo, and much less knowingly”, the presenter has stated.

Far from stopping at the denial, Ruiz launched a broader message about the exercise of journalism, distancing himself from any practice linked to interested leaks. Ruiz took advantage of his intervention to underscore the seriousness of the case, recalling that it is a “corruption plot of great depth” that involves the use of police resources to commit crimes and hide evidence. In this sense, he launched a direct message: “Those of us who are not part of your plots, please let go of our arm, we are not all the same”. As the trial progresses, the journalist vindicated professional independence in the face of a case that continues to splash various spheres of political and media power.
