The musical franchise Mamma Mia! is officially preparing its third film, as confirmed by Dame Donna Langley, president of Universal Pictures, during the recent gala of the BAFTA 2026. Langley explained that the project is in initial development phases and that they are already in conversations with the original producer, Judy Craymer, to move forward with the production of Mamma Mia 3.
Although there is still no filming or release date announced, Langley communicated a hopeful message for the followers of the saga: “If Meryl Streep wanted to return, we would find a way to bring her back”, fueling speculation about the possible participation of the iconic actress, whose character, Donna Sheridan, did not actively appear in the second film after her death in the story.
The confirmation of the third part comes years after the success of Mamma Mia! (2008) and its sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), and has generated great expectation among fans who hope not only for a return to the Greek islands full of music from ABBA, but also the possible reunification of a large part of the original cast.
Although the plot details are still to be defined, the announcement represents an important step to revive one of the most beloved musicals of recent times.
