Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) has surprised by confirming that it will broadcast in open the successful miniseries ‘Anatomy of a Moment’, originally produced by Movistar Plus+ and based on the book of the same name by Javier Cercas about the failed coup d'état of February 23, 1981. The complete broadcast of the four episodes is scheduled for Sunday, February 22, just when the commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the historical events on which the fiction delves takes place.

The decision by RTVE is unusual, as the series was conceived as a paid production for streaming and belongs to the catalog of Movistar Plus+. However, the public broadcaster has acquired its rights to be able to broadcast it on La 1, betting on bringing a work of great historical relevance to a wider audience.

The miniseries, directed by Alberto Rodríguez and written by Rafael Cobos, Fran Araújo and Rodríguez himself, adapts in detail the story from the book by Cercas about one of the most tense moments of the Spanish democratic transition. The fiction focuses on key figures such as Adolfo Suárez —played by Álvaro Morte—, Santiago Carrillo (Eduard Fernández) and Gutiérrez Mellado (Manolo Solo), protagonists not only of the fiction, but of the assault on Congress when other deputies sought refuge.

The joint broadcast of the four episodes in prime time seeks to offer a special television experience —breaking with the usual programming— and bring the public closer to a dramatized account of a crucial episode within Spanish democracy. In this way, RTVE expands its schedule with content of historical quality and highlights a shift in its programming strategy by offering in the open content that was going to be destined for paid subscription.
