The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, broke his silence last Wednesday, April 30, in Huelva to denounce the lack of accountability after the railway accident that occurred in Adamuz (Córdoba) more than one hundred days ago. During his intervention in the forum ‘Dialogando’, organized by the Azahara de Comunicaciones group, the Andalusian leader stated that the current situation “makes him blush” given the absence of clear explanations.

Moreno underlined that the autonomous administration had maintained “a more than respectful silence” since the incident, as a sign of respect for the 46 affected families. “For months we have been silent, we have not demanded anything from the Government and the only thing we have done is collaborate”, he explained, justifying the institutional prudence maintained since the accident.

However, the popular leader assured that the pressure from the victims themselves has led him to speak publicly. “More than a hundred days have passed and we still don't know exactly what happened”, he denounced, pointing out that the only clues come from the investigation by the Guardia Civil, which points to a break in the track detected up to 22 hours before the accident.

In this regard, Moreno focused on possible structural failures, mentioning the previous warnings from railway unions about the state of the infrastructures. “We have serious doubts about the maintenance of those tracks and about whether that accident could have been avoided with better maintenance,” he stated, indirectly questioning the management of state bodies such as Renfe.

The Andalusian president also lashed out against the statements of the head of Renfe, who claimed to feel “as much a victim” as those affected. Moreno described those words as “indecent”, adding that one cannot compare “from a 50-square-meter office” with those who have lost family members in the accident.

Finally, Moreno denounced a “lack of sensitivity and empathy” on the part of the state administration and demanded transparency to guarantee the future safety of the railway system in Andalusia. “The limit has been reached,” he stated, insisting on the need to clarify the facts and establish responsibilities after the accident occurred in Adamuz.
