The Guardia Civil has placed under investigation twelve natural persons and three legal entities within the framework of operation 'Cover', for their alleged involvement in a serious crime against the environment in the province of Malaga. The facts focus on the illegal dumping of approximately 167,000 tons of waste originating from construction works, many of them highly contaminating.

According to the documents, the investigated, linked to the construction and earthmoving sector, would have avoided the mandatory legal controls for the correct management of these waste materials. To do this, they used rustic plots located in the region of Axarquía as clandestine landfills, reducing costs outside the current regulations.

Among the detected materials was asbestos, a substance especially dangerous for human health. The improper handling of this type of waste can release harmful fibers into the air, which poses a serious risk of respiratory diseases, in addition to a significant environmental impact.

The authorities also warn of the added danger of fires due to the accumulation of flammable materials, as well as of the possible contamination of aquifers by toxic leaks. The proceedings have already been sent to the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of Málaga, which will continue with the judicial process.
