Podemos has reached an agreement to integrate into the coalition Por Andalucía along with Izquierda Unida and Sumar ahead of the regional elections on May 17. The candidacy will also include Iniciativa del Pueblo Andaluz, Alternativa Republicana, Partido Verde and Alianza Verde, forming a broad bloc of forces to the left of the PSOE.

The agreement was closed after more than ten hours of meeting held last Thursday, in which the different formations negotiated the terms of Podemos' incorporation. “The incorporation of Podemos strengthens this common project and demonstrates that Por Andalucía is the space for understanding and the confluence of the lefts in our land,” sources from the coalition stated after concluding the conversations.

Furthermore, the alliance has already been officially registered, thus avoiding the last-minute problems that marked the 2022 electoral process, when the registration was made after the legal deadline. On this occasion, Por Andalucía formalized its candidacy before 11:59 p.m. on Friday.

From the coalition they emphasize that this agreement adds to a previous work of more than a year in the elaboration of the electoral program and in the election of the candidate for the Presidency of the Junta de Andalucía, the federal coordinator of IU, Antonio Maíllo. In this initial process, Podemos did not participate, which now joins an already defined structure.

The implicated formations consider that the formal entry of Podemos “marks a turning point” and sends a message of unity against the current autonomous Executive of the Popular Party. According to them, the pact turns the coalition into “the worst news” for Juanma Moreno and into a useful tool for the “Andalusian social majority”.

For its part, Podemos Andalucía has claimed its “generosity” by accepting integration into Por Andalucía “for the good of the Andalusian people” and with the aim of avoiding electoral fragmentation. The party has highlighted that its Andalusian Citizen Council, the highest body between assemblies, backed the agreement after a consultation with the grassroots, thus avoiding the concurrence of three different lists to the left of the PSOE.
