The Sevillian town of Coripe has celebrated one more year its traditional burning of Judas, a centuries-old custom that on this occasion has had as its main figure the Russian president, Vladímir Putin. The doll, hung from a tree, was shot, beaten and finally burned in the presence of neighbors and visitors, following the usual ritual of this festivity.
The staging also incorporated images of other international leaders such as Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, which has amplified the impact of the event after videos were disseminated on social media. As is tradition, the chosen character is kept secret until the last moment and usually corresponds to unpopular current figures or those considered evil by the community.
This rite, celebrated every Easter Sunday, symbolizes the punishment of Judas Iscariot through the representation of public figures. Although it is part of the local cultural heritage, the choice of controversial figures has generated criticism in previous editions, in which names such as Carles Puigdemont or Rodrigo Rato were also protagonists. Despite this, Coripe keeps alive one of the most unique and media-friendly traditions of Spanish Holy Week.
