The fire declared in Leciñena has stopped growing. After a night of intense work, the perimeter remains stabilized at around 2,200 hectares and the extinction device has managed to contain the flames in the Sierra de Alcubierre, although the Government of Aragon warns that this Wednesday will be the most demanding day for its definitive control.
Six teams made up of ground crews, Infoar fire engines, the two UME battalions and resources from the provincial councils of Huesca and Zaragoza attacked the flanks of the fire throughout the night. Since early this Wednesday, aerial resources and new ground reinforcements have joined the operation, while the CECOPI remains meeting to adjust the response as the situation evolves.
The speed with which the fire spread in its first hours evidenced its destructive potential by leaving close to one thousand hectares of the Sierra de Alcubierre burned in just two and a half hours. The Minister of Finance, Interior and Public Administration, Roberto Bermúdez de Castro, did not hide his concern about the speed with which the flames advanced. The affected area also has a unique historical and cultural value; in that same mountain range is the Orwell trenches route, one of the most emblematic scenarios of the Spanish Civil War.
For the moment, nearby municipalities do not face the risk of evacuation or confinement, although the teams maintain vigilance for possible changes in wind direction. The Government of Aragon has reported that roads A-129, between Leciñena and Alcubierre, and A-1211, between Robres and Alcubierre, remain closed to traffic.
