The mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca (PP), has distanced herself from far-right discourses and has appealed for institutional responsibility in the fight against gender violence, demanding “unity, respect, and a great deal of responsibility.”
During a rally held at the doors of the City Hall, under the banner ‘Against gender violence’, the councilwoman has gathered the municipal corporation and residents who wanted to show their rejection of the murder of Silvia, shot by her ex-partner this Saturday in front of her business in the Las Fuentes neighborhood.
In that context, Chueca has emphasized the need for all institutions to continue promoting measures against violence towards women, insisting that “and that we can only do with unity, respect, and with a great deal of responsibility.”
The council had already condemned the events on Saturday itself through an official statement, following the established protocol, in which it recalled that gender violence attacks the physical and moral integrity of women and constitutes a serious violation of Human Rights.
As a sign of mourning, a day of official mourning has been decreed and flags fly at half-mast in the city.
After the minute of silence, the mayor reiterated her condemnation “firmly and emphatically this terrible murder that has shocked us all. There is no possible justification for violence, and even less so when it is violence that takes a life and destroys a family. I want to convey, on behalf of the entire city of Zaragoza, our condolences and our affection to Silvia's family, a woman very loved in the Las Fuentes neighborhood. And very especially, to her two children, who today are orphaned because of this murder.”
Likewise, he has warned of the seriousness of the problem, pointing out that “yesterday and today are days of pain, sadness, and shock. Unfortunately, this crime is not an isolated incident. Violence has already claimed the lives of 14 women so far this year in Spain. These are unbearable figures that oblige us, as a society, not to look the other way. From the institutions, we have the responsibility to act with firmness, but also to continue working on prevention, protection, and awareness. Because only through unity and collective commitment will we be able to eradicate this violence.”
