The organization Alarm Phone has reported the disappearance of 23 people who departed last Wednesday from Algeria in a dinghy bound for the Balearic Islands. Since then, contact with the vessel has not been re-established, which has triggered concern among relatives and migrant support groups.

According to the entity, the dinghy departed from the Algerian town of Bomerdès, located about 40 kilometers from Algiers, to undertake a journey of nearly 300 kilometers across the Mediterranean to the Balearic coasts. Alarm Phone states that it has already transferred all the information to the authorities while search efforts continue.

The migratory route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands continues to be one of the most dangerous in the western Mediterranean. The NGO Caminando Fronteras estimated 1,037 people died last year on this maritime route towards the Balearic Islands and the peninsular levant. So far this year, 1,754 migrants have already arrived in the archipelago aboard 89 dinghies.
