The spokesperson for the Basque Nationalist Party in Congress, Maribel Vaquero, has criticized the lack of explanations from the Government regarding the stance adopted after Donald Trump's attack against Iran. The jeltzale leader has also questioned the message of “no to war” defended by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and has demanded more information and clarity for the citizenry.

In an interview on the program 24 hours on TVE, reported by 'ElConstitucional.es', Vaquero thus referred to the Spanish Executive's decision to maintain the slogan of “no to war” and to prevent the United States from using the bases of Rota Naval Base and Morón Air Base in the context of the conflict in the Middle East.

The PNV spokesperson has warned that it is “a complicated issue” about which, in her opinion, the Government is not providing the necessary information. “Evidently, we respect international law and human rights above all else. We believe that Europe also has to strengthen itself in defense matters, but that it is no longer enough to just say 'no to war' or 'yes to war', but that we have to explain our position and know what is happening in the world,” she explained.

Vaquero has also pointed out that the international scenario is changing. In his view, “the great powers and the great world leaders have decided that the world has to change”, which is why Europe must react to this new context. In this sense, he has defended that the continent “has to position itself in this new world, with the greatest respect for human rights and international law”, but also believes it is necessary “to take another step, and set the course and strategy” to follow.

The jeltzale leader has insisted that she does not share the simplified approaches to the conflict. "I don't believe in those slogans of 'yes to war' or 'no to war'", she stated, before adding that "the citizenry deserves more explanations, to know what is happening, and why these types of positions are taken."
