The mayor of Escalona, Álvaro Gutiérrez, has lamented the collapse this Saturday of one of the albarrana towers of the town's castle and has announced that evaluations will be carried out to determine the damage and review the state of the rest of the monument's elements.
In statements to the media after the event, the mayor explained that the collapse would have occurred "as a consequence fundamentally of, it seems, of the accumulation of water after the intense rains of these past dates."
Gutiérrez has indicated that he has already contacted different administrations to analyze the situation and study the steps to follow. The objective, he pointed out, is "to see the possibilities first, of evaluating the damages, undoubtedly, second, of carrying out an audit of the state of the rest of the castle's elements, both external and internal."
In that framework, he has announced that this Sunday "technicians from the General Directorate of Heritage of the Ministry of Education of the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha" will go to the municipality. "Together, as I say, we will evaluate, we will see damages, we will see the structure and actions to take in the coming days," he added.
After the collapse, the area has been cordoned off and visits to the castle have been suspended not only during this Saturday's day, but also during the coming weeks.
The mayor has also highlighted that the incident has not caused injuries. "Fortunately there are no personal injuries to regret", he pointed out, since the collapse occurred at a time when there were no visitors, although the arrival of tourist groups was scheduled shortly after. "Within the absolute sorrow, within the misfortune of what has happened", he stated, "we are well, then, freed from the tragedy".
