The administrations responsible for the management and conservation of the natural environment of Montserrat have agreed to temporarily restrict access to the Camí de les Feixades, the path where businessman Isak Andic, founder of Mango, died on December 14, 2024, due to existing risks to the safety of hikers.

According to the signage installed on the ground, the closure affects both the Camí de les Feixades and the Camí de la Santa Cova and is motivated by the existence of rockfalls, landslides, and ground instability resulting from the latest rains recorded in the area. The warnings recommend using alternative routes, as published by ‘El Punt Avui’.

The signs are jointly signed by the Patronat de la Muntanya de Montserrat, the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat, and the Collbató City Council. The decision takes on special relevance as it coincides with the judicial and expert debate opened around the circumstances of the fatal fall of the founder of Mango.

The official warnings describe a risk scenario associated with possible rockfalls and ground instability, circumstances that have led the competent authorities to limit visitor traffic in the area until further notice.

Last weekend, the Generalitat Firefighters had to rescue a hiker who had fallen down a slope of about 10 meters between Collbató and the Santa Cova. A helicopter intervened in the operation to extract him.

The closure reopens the debate on environmental safety

The issue has also gained interest after the recent arrest of Jonathan Andic and the ongoing judicial investigation into his father's death. The assessment of the physical characteristics of the terrain constitutes one of the relevant elements to accurately reconstruct the circumstances of any accident occurring in mountain environments, especially in areas subject to erosion processes, rockfalls, or modifications derived from meteorological phenomena.

Official warnings and motivation for the closure

The existence of official access restrictions for safety reasons has also reopened the debate on the objective conditions of the itinerary and on the need to incorporate all available topographical and environmental factors into the technical analysis of the facts.

The responsible agencies have not linked the closure decision to the case, but to preventive safety reasons for users of the natural space. However, the temporal coincidence between both circumstances has once again focused attention on the characteristics of the trail and the risks associated with the route. The restrictions will remain in force until further notice, according to information released by the responsible authorities.
