Catalonia faces this Sunday one of the most intense wind episodes of recent months. The storm, which began on Saturday, has gained strength overnight and is causing incidents on roads, problems in transport, and adverse conditions also at sea and in mountain areas.

The most striking figure has been registered in Portbou, where the wind has reached 169 km/h, a figure that reflects the virulence of the episode.

Five regions on red alert

The risk is extreme in five regions:

  • Alt Empordà
  • Ripollès
  • Cerdanya
  • Berguedà
  • Solsonès

In these areas, the situation is of very high danger, while in a large part of the rest of the territory the risk remains at high or moderate levels.

According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, this Sunday is experiencing the most intense moment of the episode, which could extend until Monday and even leave residual effects on Tuesday.

Roads closed and mobility problems

The most notable incident is being the fall of trees, especially in the regions of Girona, which has forced to cut several roads.

Added to this is the snow in the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees, which complicates traffic and obliges to use chains on a dozen roads.

Among the affected roads are:

Gi-502 in Darnius
Gi-506 in La Vajol
GiV-5032 in Fontcuberta
GiV-5223 and GiV-5265 in Camprodon and Vilallonga de Ter
GiV-5234 in La Beuda
GiV-6641 in Quart

Additionally, Renfe has suspended several sections of Rodalies as a precaution, with alternative bus service.

Alerts and recommendations

Civil Protection has activated the Ventcat plan and has sent alerts to mobile phones in several northern regions.

During the morning, the 112 has received more than a hundred calls related to incidents due to the wind.

The authorities recommend:

  • avoid unnecessary travel
  • do not approach trees, facades, or unstable structures
  • suspend outdoor activities

The storm is also being felt on the coast. The Tramontana is generating strong swell, especially on the Costa Brava.

The waves can exceed 2.5 meters, with active warnings in Alt and Baix Empordà and La Selva.

Although the most critical moment is being lived this Sunday, the situation will not improve immediately.

The wind could continue blowing with intensity until Monday, and the instability —with snow, swell, and strong gusts— could extend during the coming days.
