The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, believes that in the current context “calling elections would not be the best idea” due to the existing uncertainty. He stated this in an interview granted to La Vanguardia this Sunday.
Illa has insisted that bringing forward the elections is not in his plans. “It is not what I want nor is it what I have in mind,” he has stated, while assuring that he will continue negotiating until the last moment to reach an agreement with Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya that allows the approval of the Generalitat's Budgets for 2026. The deadline to achieve that pact ends next Friday.
Even so, the Catalan president has acknowledged that he will act as the situation evolves. As he explained, “depending on how things evolve,” he will make the necessary decisions to guarantee the general interest. In this context, Illa has appealed to the responsibility of progressive forces, in reference to ERC. He also recalled that the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya supported in 2023 the budgets of the Government presided over by Pere Aragonès, the last ones that managed to be approved.
“In the past, it was I who approved Esquerra's budgets. And today it must be ERC who approves my government's budgets”, Illa emphasized.
