The spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Extremadura Assembly, Piedad Álvarez, indicated this Monday that she does not rule out that María Guardiola may withdraw her candidacy for the investiture debate which should start this Tuesday, if she considers that she faces a failed vote without sufficient support. Álvarez has questioned the strategy of the Popular Party for not clarifying its steps nor guaranteeing what will happen with the presidential election and the foreseen deadlines.
At a press conference, the socialist leader has emphasized her surprise at the current political uncertainty, recalling that the early election last December was proposed to offer stability to Extremadura, but months later it is still not clear if Guardiola will be able to pass the investiture on Wednesday, or even in a second vote on Friday if she does not achieve the necessary majority. Furthermore, she has stressed that Vox has not yet confirmed whether it will vote in favor or abstain, something key for the popular candidate to obtain the support she needs.
Álvarez has charged against the PP for what he considers an "absolutely irresponsible" attitude that leaves Extremadura without parliamentary control and without addressing key problems such as education, healthcare, or employment, and has demanded that the regional chamber resume its political control activity if the investiture debate is finally held. In the PSOE's opinion, the holding of an investiture without clear support would be a spectacle that harms regional democracy.
