The seven Galician activists who were part of the international flotilla heading to Gaza will return this Saturday night to Santiago de Compostela after several days detained by Israel following the interception of the vessel in Mediterranean waters. The group will first arrive in Madrid from Istanbul and will later travel by train to the Galician capital, where their arrival is scheduled around 10:00 PM.
The organization Global Sumud Flotilla has confirmed that all of them are in good health, although several needed medical attention after their deportation to Turkey. As explained by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, four of the Spaniards traveling aboard required medical assistance, although no further details about their condition were released.
The activists and the organizations that support them denounce having suffered "extreme violence" during their detention. Among the reported episodes are sleep deprivation, beatings, immobilizations with extremely tight zip ties, and even electric shocks with tasers.
The Galician delegation deployed in the flotilla was formed by Sandra Garrido, Alberte Pagán, Ana Fuentes, Andrea Morales, Benito González, Duarte Ferrín, and Xurxo Porritt. Their return will put an end to several days of uncertainty after a humanitarian mission marked by diplomatic tension and the denunciations of human rights violations after Israel's intervention.
