Ayuso's PP again flees from explanations about the purchase of the luxury penthouse and tries to divert the focus with attacks on Sánchez

The general secretary of the Popular Party (PP) in Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, has categorically rejected the existence of any irregular purchase by a regional Executive aimed at concealing corrupt acts, calling the current central Government "the most disastrous and mafia-like" that Spain has had.

These statements were made during the closing of the conferences organized by the Popular Parliamentary Group, on the occasion of the start of the new political year. Serrano emphasized that they will not allow the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, to impose a debate different from what really interests the citizens of Madrid and Spain.

The controversy revolves around the acquisition made by the Community of Madrid of a penthouse located in the Chamberí neighborhood. Although the regional Government considers that sufficient explanations have already been offered to settle this matter, Serrano warned about governmental attempts to change the informational focus.

Serrano warned that current episodes are not isolated events and affirmed that Sánchez could be trying to transform the upcoming general elections into a personal plebiscite. In this regard, he highlighted that the president seeks to avoid any discussion related to his management or his political pacts when Spaniards go to vote.

“He needs to divert attention anywhere else except to his figure”, explained Serrano, who added: “When reality becomes uncomfortable, the temptation to propose alternative debates always arises.”

Threats to the constitutional system

From this critical perspective, the popular leader did not rule out possible future attempts to open controversies on sensitive issues such as the Spanish Crown, the model of the State, or even constitutional modifications. He also recalled how Sánchez, according to him, has come to compare himself to the King, which the PP of Madrid believes generates uncertainty about what else Sánchez could do.

Under this context, Serrano stressed that recent events in Ceuta show a president “surrendered to those who threaten the country,” pointing to a progressive submission both to Morocco and to Catalan separatist movements or heirs of ETA.
