The Madrid City Council and the Government Delegation are working on a joint operation to prevent incidents in the capital during the next few hours, as reported by the city's mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, in an interview on Antena 3.
Martínez-Almeida stressed that both administrations are acting in a coordinated manner to reinforce security in the capital, with the aim of preventing altercations and, if they occur, intervening quickly. “We are working with the Government Delegation and we are working well with the Delegation to create a security device to prevent incidents from occurring and, if they do occur, to be able to suppress them as soon as possible,” highlighted the mayor of Madrid.
The municipal operation has been designed around the celebration of Halloween and All Saints' Day, days on which the council plans to reinforce police presence in different parts of the city.
1,700 agents and reinforcement of ordinary service
The Madrid City Council has activated a device with 1,700 agents during the festive days, in addition to keeping municipal police officers from the ordinary service on standby in case it is necessary to expand any deployment, all in coordination with the National Police.
The measure is adopted in response to calls for possible acts of vandalism that could occur on Friday and Saturday, according to information provided by the council. In this context, the deputy mayor, delegate for Security and Emergencies of Madrid and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, warned on Thursday that, although some information points to the possible cancellation of these calls, there is no total certainty that this will happen.
“There are some news reports that say these calls may have been canceled, but obviously we cannot be certain that this will happen,” said Inma Sanz at the press conference after the Government Board.
