Más Madrid demands the Government delegate stop Maricarmen's eviction and requests the cessation of the "excess of violence" against protesters

The spokesperson for Más Madrid in the Madrid Assembly, Manuela Bergerot, contacted the Government delegate in Madrid this Wednesday to demand the paralysis of the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman who has lived for 71 years in her home on Alcalde Sáinz de Baranda street. The Madrid leader also requested that the police action against the people gathered to try to prevent the eviction be stopped.

During the conversation, Bergerot conveyed her rejection of what she considers a disproportionate police action. The spokesperson denounced "the excess of violence against the people who went to defend Mari Carmen" and demanded an intervention by the institutions to prevent the eviction from being carried out.

Bergerot described the eviction as "shameful and aberrant" for affecting an 87-year-old woman and warned that "whose images will go around the world." In this regard, she asked the Government delegate to intervene in the operation deployed around the property.

The Más Madrid leader urged the delegate to "do everything necessary" for the Judicial Commission to "back down" and demanded that he order the agents to "stop the violence against the protesters as soon as possible."

The request comes after the National Police cordoned off the surroundings of the building since early morning and began to remove the tents installed overnight by the Madrid Tenants' Union. The collective had organized a camp to try to prevent Maricarmen's eviction, initially scheduled for 7:30 a.m.

The conflict has its origin in the housing rental situation. Maricarmen has been residing in the same home for decades and currently pays 500 euros per month, while the property demands to raise the rent to 2,650 euros. The lack of agreement between both parties has led to the eviction procedure.

The mobilization has gathered dozens of people in the vicinity of the property, who have remained in the area after the police intervention. The case has also led to the involvement of various political and cultural figures, given the situation of a woman who has spent more than seven decades living in the same home.
