The Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, committed this Thursday to continue "developing appropriate actions" in the Puerta del Sol regarding the encampment called against evictions and for the housing situation, although, as he stressed, always within the "current regulatory framework" and with express respect for the right of assembly of the demonstrators.
"Of course, we will continue to develop our actions, appropriate actions, always in strict compliance with the regulatory framework, as it cannot be otherwise. And in particular, in respect of the right of assembly," said Francisco Martín in statements to the press, before attending an informative breakfast with the president of the Constitutional Court, Cándido Conde-Pumpido.
Response to the requirements of the Community and the City Council
The Government delegate also announced that throughout the morning he will address the Community of Madrid and the Madrid City Council to respond to the requirements that both institutions have sent him with the aim of achieving the eviction of Sol. Martín appealed, in this context, to collaboration between administrations while actions in the vicinity of the square remain open.
This Thursday marks the end of the 48-hour period that the Community of Madrid granted to the Government Delegation to evict Puerta del Sol before resorting to legal action. The capital's City Council also made a request in the same vein and accompanied it with evidence, according to its version, that the demonstrators are accumulating knives and stones.
The encampment, linked to the case of Maricarmen
The encampment in Puerta del Sol began last Saturday as part of protests against the eviction of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman who was expelled from her home in Retiro after 70 years residing there. After the controversy generated, the City Council, the Tenants' Union and the company that bought the home reached an agreement for the affected person to continue living in the property.
