Amnesty International has highlighted Spain's role as one of the few countries that maintain a firm defense of international legality. During the presentation of its latest report on human rights in London, the secretary general, Agnès Callamard, highlighted the Spanish Executive's positioning as especially relevant.
Callamard warned of the deterioration of the rules-based world order and denounced that many European countries have opted for “complicity or silence” in the face of violations of international law. In this way, she directly pointed to leaders such as Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladímir Putin as responsible for decisions that have contributed to that erosion.
Faced with this situation, the head of Amnesty highlighted that “there are Governments, and in particular that of Spain, that insist on maintaining a moral compass on who we want to be and what we want to do”. As she explained, this attitude contrasts with the dominant trend in the international community, where, in her opinion, that ethical reference has been lost.
The leader also compared the Spanish stance with that of other countries, pointing out that there are hardly any similar examples. She mentioned the case of Sudáfrica, although she clarified that its action has not been constant, as it has shown firmness in relation to the situation in Gaza, but not in other international conflicts.
In subsequent statements, Callamard was even more forceful in stating that the Spanish Government “is the only one that is responding against this predatory world order” and the one that has systematically denounced violations of international law, regardless of the country committing them, including Israel.
