The health authorities of Países Bajos have ordered the home quarantine of twelve members of the health staff of the Hospital Universitario Radboud after attending to one of the passengers of the MV Hondius cruise ship admitted with hantavirus. According to the medical center, during patient care only “standard protection measures” were applied in procedures such as blood extraction and urine sample processing.

The preventive isolation imposed by the Dutch authorities will be maintained until next June 18, within the surveillance protocol established after the outbreak registered on the cruise ship. The Ministry of Health of Países Bajos has indicated that “in theory” there is the possibility that a person could infect family members or cohabitants at the end of the 42-day quarantine period, reason why extending restrictions in certain cases is not ruled out.

Meanwhile, Australia has recognized the difficulties in managing the repatriation of four Australian passengers transferred during the early morning to Dutch territory. The Australian Minister of Health described the operation as “complex” due to the fact that those affected can only remain in the Netherlands for a maximum of 48 hours before continuing their transfer.
