Jordan Bardella returns to Le Pen's bench despite being the most marketable face of the French far-right

The ultra leader maintains control of National Rally, will run for president despite her conviction, and reserves the role of prime minister for her 'dauphin' if she reaches the Élysée.

Jordan Bardella had been rehearsing the role of candidate for months. Marine Le Pen took it out of his hands in one night. The leader of the French far-right has confirmed that she will run in the 2027 presidential elections despite her conviction for embezzlement of European funds, and her 'dauphin' returns to the place he knows best within the National Rally: by her side, one step behind, and smiling for the photo.

The scene at La Flèche was calculated. Le Pen kicked off her pre-campaign with Bardella glued to her, amidst cheers from her supporters and shouts of protest from those reminding her of the diverted public money. He dispelled any suspicion of an internal power struggle with a phrase of political obedience: “I am glad that Marine can represent our movement.”

Bardella, 30, was the plan prepared by RN if justice ruled Le Pen out. The Paris Court of Appeal has allowed her to remain eligible by deeming the firm part of the disqualification fulfilled, although it maintains her conviction and one year of house arrest with an electronic bracelet, suspended while she appeals to the Court of Cassation. That legal loophole has been enough for Le Pen to regain the wheel.

The succession is postponed. And in a party so built around the Le Pen surname, that is not an internal detail, but rather a decision of great weight.

The perfect candidate who will continue to wait

Bardella is the piece that the French far-right has been polishing for years to sell itself with less noise. Tall, impeccable, young, telegenic and with a biographical narrative that RN exploits to the millimeter. Son of an Italian mother and raised in Seine-Saint-Denis, one of France's departments with the largest immigrant population, he has turned his origin into political ammunition against immigration and Islam.

His discourse works because it is wrapped in calm. Bardella does not need to shout to bring the ultra message to TV sets, social networks, and rallies. He speaks in a low tone, dark suit, and controlled gesture. That is part of his strength. It makes the old National Rally program seem more acceptable to voters who still view the Le Pen surname with suspicion.

Bardella remains within that operation, but with another role. Le Pen offers him as future prime minister. It is a way of integrating him without ceding him the candidacy. It is also an insurance in case justice moves the board again.

A renewal with deep roots

The big question is whether Bardella represents a real break or just an update of the product. In France, many see him as the ideal face for a far-right that wants to appear institutional without abandoning its identitarian obsession. His youth helps. His surname too. He does not carry the family history of Jean-Marie Le Pen, nor the phrases about the gas chambers, nor the symbolic mansion of the old National Front.

Even so, his ascent does not fall from the sky. Bardella joined very young, was an MEP, head of the list in the European elections, and party president since 2022. His entire career has been built within the apparatus. He is not an outsider who comes to RN from outside. He is a product of the house, designed to make the house look new.

Nor is he free of European shadows. The European Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating another alleged irregular use of funds linked to the former ultra group in the European Parliament, a case distinct from Le Pen's and focused on expenses of RN's circle and its allies between 2019 and 2024. The party that boasts of order is once again moving with European money in the courts hot on its heels.

The Bardella paradox is there. He can be more competitive than Le Pen for certain voters and, at the same time, less solid within the party. He can speak like a future leader and depend entirely on the woman who has just blocked his path. He can sell renewal while defending the same hard core that has brought National Rally to the gates of power.

Le Pen has chosen the ballot. Bardella will have to wait, campaign, occupy secondary roles, and pretend it doesn't weigh on him. In the French far-right, the handover already has a face. It still doesn't have permission.
