During her visit to Madrid, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition María Corina Machado has insisted that the summit of progressive leaders held in Barcelona reinforces her decision not to hold a meeting with Pedro Sánchez. According to what she has declared to the media, recent events “have evidenced” that her stance was the appropriate one, thus avoiding an institutional rapprochement at this moment.
In contrast, the Venezuelan leader has held meetings with representatives of the Partido Popular and Vox, whom she has publicly thanked for their political support. In addition, she is scheduled to meet with the president of the Comunidad de Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in a meeting in which she will receive the gold medal from the regional administration.
In her statements, Machado has also stressed the importance of international support, pointing out that her team maintains regular contacts with Estados Unidos, especially within the framework of the initiatives promoted by the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Likewise, she has reiterated that the holding of “clean and free” elections is key for a democratic transition in Venezuela.
