The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has stated that “it would make no sense” for the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to take action against Spain and has warned that such a decision “would be the world upside down”.

Speaking to the media, Albares has defended the relationship between both countries and has stressed that Spain is a reliable partner within the Atlantic alliance. “Spain is a serious and responsible ally”, the minister assured.

The head of Spanish diplomacy has thus responded to Trump's recent criticisms, who has accused Spain of not cooperating sufficiently in defense matters and has hinted at possible commercial reprisals against the country.

Albares has rejected that interpretation and has insisted that cooperation between both countries is solid. “It would make no sense for the United States to take action against Spain,” he reiterated.

In this regard, the minister has stressed that the bilateral relationship and collaboration within NATO are based on shared interests and has defended that Spain will continue acting as a committed ally within international structures.
