The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has reiterated Spain's opposition to a war with Iran and has defended the need to opt for diplomacy to resolve the crisis in the Middle East. In an institutional statement, he summarized the Executive's position in four words: “No to war”, in reference to the military escalation initiated after the attacks by the United States and Israel against Iranian territory.
Sánchez warned that an open conflict with Iran could have serious consequences for international stability and recalled the negative effects of previous wars in the region. The president insisted that global problems cannot be resolved through bombings and asked to avoid repeating past mistakes.
The statement by the head of the Executive occurs amid a strong military escalation in the Middle East, where the bombings initiated on February 28 have caused hundreds of victims and retaliatory attacks with missiles and drones in several countries of the region.
The Spanish Government has also defended respect for international law and has called for an immediate de-escalation, while advocating for dialogue and a political solution to stop the conflict and avoid a wider war in the area.
