The man arrested after the assault has been formally charged by the federal Justice of the United States for attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump. The appearance, held before a federal judge, served to communicate to him three initial charges of great seriousness, among them the attempt of assassination of a head of state, a crime that can entail penalties of up to life imprisonment.
According to what was presented by the Prosecutor's Office, the charges also include crimes related to the use of firearms during the commission of a violent act and the assault on a federal agent. The authorities consider that the accused acted with a clear and premeditated intention to attack the president and other high-ranking government officials present at the event.
The charge is, for the moment, preliminary. Sources from the Department of Justice have indicated that in the coming days a broader formal indictment could be filed, incorporating new crimes as the investigation progresses and all the evidence collected by the investigators is analyzed.
During the hearing, the accused remained in a calm demeanor and briefly answered the judge's questions. In the next court hearing, it will be determined if he remains in pre-trial detention or if he can opt for freedom on bail while the judicial process unfolds.
Parallelly, the authorities continue investigating in depth the motives and the planning of the attack, including the analysis of documents, communications and testimonies from his/her/its environment.
