At least 132 people have lost their lives and more than 570 have been injured after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook a large part of Colombia this Monday. The seismic movement has caused damage of varying consideration in several parts of the country, especially in the center and west, with affected buildings and some collapses.
The earthquake occurred at 07:34 (12:34 GMT) and originated near San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, on the Colombian Pacific coast. According to the first data provided by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), the focus was located about 82 kilometers deep.
One of the most affected areas has been Quibdó, capital of Chocó, where injuries and the collapse of several constructions have been registered. The tremor was also felt intensely in Bogotá, Cali, Popayán, Manizales, Armenia, Pereira and Medellín, among other cities.
In Cali and Manizales, different buildings have suffered damage to their facades. In Manizales, in addition, one of the cathedral towers has been affected. The mayors of both localities have reported that at least twenty deaths have been counted.
The situation is also especially complicated in Pereira, capital of Risaralda. Numerous properties have suffered structural damage and some constructions have been partially demolished. Among the affected infrastructures is the city's airport.
In Bogotá, however, the initial balance is less serious. The mayor, Carlos Fernando Galán, has indicated that for now no structural damage has been detected, although cracks have been located in some buildings.
