As of today, Wednesday, August 2, 1,127 people have already been registered as deceased and 4,850 remain missing, after a week has passed since the devastating flood, which has swept away entire towns in the center and northern part of the country. These data have been provided by a latest report from the Nepali Police.
During the last hours, thanks to search and rescue efforts, 77 new bodies have been found, while unfortunately, the number of missing persons has also increased by almost a thousand people compared to the previous day. This data collection has been easier, thanks to the restoration of telecommunications in affected areas, which has allowed access to more information. Among all the deceased, there are at least 77 children, and more than 400 partial body parts.
Regarding the number of foreigners, it has been estimated at least 583 citizens, who are still missing after the serious catastrophe. But on the other hand, so far, the authorities have rescued 6,541 people, including 580 foreigners. Last Monday, the Government of Nepal sent an urgent request to the board of directors of the Loss and Damage Response Fund (LDRF), which is a global climate finance mechanism, to request financial assistance after the deadly floods.
As for the flood itself, according to some local observers, it has been described as the largest on record. According to some reports, a water surge of between 15 and 18 meters above the usual river level, devastating settlements along a 72-kilometer stretch of the Trishuli River. For this reason, it destroyed the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border post, on the border between Nepal and China, a key route for bilateral trade, and affected dozens of settlements.
