The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has described this Saturday as “very concerning” the “developments” in Iran and, without expressly mentioning Israel or the United States, has asked the parties involved for “maximum restraint” to protect the civilian population and ensure respect for International Law.
“The events in Iran are very concerning. We remain in close contact with our partners in the region. We reaffirm our strong commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability”, the community leader said in a message disseminated on social media.
Following the ongoing situation in Iran, I am convening a special Security College on Monday.

For regional security and stability, it is of the utmost importance that there is no further escalation through Iran’s unjustified attacks on partners in the region.
Given the escalation derived from the massive attack launched by Washington and Tel Aviv, Von der Leyen has urged “all parties to act with the utmost restraint”, emphasizing that they must “protect the civilian population and fully respect international law”.
In relation to the Iranian nuclear program —an argument wielded by the United States and Israel to justify their offensive—, the German conservative has warned that “it is of vital importance to guarantee nuclear security and prevent any action that could further aggravate tensions or undermine the global non-proliferation regime.”
Likewise, has recalled that the European Union has adopted “extensive sanctions in response to the actions of Iran's murderous regime and the Revolutionary Guard”, while defending diplomatic efforts to address the nuclear and ballistic programs through a negotiated solution, conversations that have been suspended after the new American attack.
“In close coordination with the EU Member States, we will take all necessary measures to ensure that EU citizens in the region can count on our full support”, he concluded.
