The number of Spanish citizens deceased due to the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes registered in Venezuela during the afternoon of Wednesday, June 24 has risen to 17, according to the latest balance released this Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Search efforts continue in the affected areas, where emergency teams are working to rescue the 12 people who remain buried under the rubble. At the same time, the number of Spaniards whose whereabouts remain unknown stands at 150.

The Ministry has also confirmed the return to Spain of the plane deployed to support emergency tasks. The aircraft, which transported the rescue teams coordinated by Civil Protection to Venezuela, is on its return journey with 29 Spanish citizens on board, who had not been able to leave the country after the earthquake.

Likewise, Foreign Affairs has reiterated that consular assistance remains fully operational to assist Spaniards who are still in Venezuelan territory. The department has reminded that emergency channels, available both on the social networks of the Ministry and the Spanish Embassy in Caracas, remain enabled and urges those who need help or have not yet contacted the authorities to use the consular assistance phone numbers: +34 910001249; +58 4242090264; +58 212 6270300; and +58 212 6270314.

Spain has already evacuated almost a hundred people from Venezuela

The repatriation operation promoted by the Government of Spain has already allowed the evacuation of 96 people from Venezuela. The A330 aircraft of the Air and Space Army landed last Sunday at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base after completing a mission that combined the transfer of emergency teams with the return of citizens affected by the earthquakes.

According to the Ministry of Defense, among the passengers were citizens of eight nationalities. Of the total evacuated, 76 are Spanish and the remaining 20 correspond to France, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Slovakia, Venezuela, and Argentina.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has indicated that this operation constitutes the first airlift organized by Spain since the beginning of the emergency and has allowed the return of dozens of people in just a few days.
