The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, appeared this Tuesday in a photograph taken on Air Force One wearing the same model of gray Nike Tech tracksuit that Nicolás Maduro was wearing in the images released after his capture last January by US forces. The snapshot was shared on social media by Steven Cheung, communications director of the White House, during the official trip of Donald Trump to China.
Cheung accompanied the publication with the message “Secretary Rubio sports the Nike Tech ‘Venezuela’ on Air Force One!”, in a direct reference to that image that had great political and media repercussions in the United States and Latin America. Rubio has been one of Washington's harshest voices against chavismo and one of the most active Republican leaders in foreign policy towards Venezuela.
The image also arrives at a moment of growing political prominence for Marco Rubio within the Republican Party. Donald Trump himself mentioned this week both Rubio and JD Vance as possible key figures for the future of the party ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.
