The Tisza Party-Respect and Freedom Party, led by conservative Péter Magyar, has emerged as the most voted force in the legislative elections held this Sunday in Hungary. With 31.03% of the votes already counted, it would obtain 135 of the 199 seats in the unicameral Parliament, a figure that would allow it to reach the qualified two-thirds majority necessary to promote far-reaching legal reforms.
According to the results released by the National Electoral Office, the Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union party, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, would come in second position with 57 seats, including those of its ally, the Christian Democratic People's Party (KDNP). For its part, the Our Homeland Movement would obtain 7 representatives.
In terms of votes, Tisza would have achieved 51.98% of the votes, compared to 39.38% for Fidesz-KDNP and 6.07% for Our Homeland in the list vote, pending the addition of seats corresponding to the direct election system. No other party would achieve parliamentary representation.
"Thank you, Hungary", Magyar has published on social media after the first results were known.
The two main forces have denounced possible irregularities during the election day, which could delay the definitive validation of the results, also awaiting the recount of the external vote.
The day has also been marked by a high turnout, which reached 77.8% at 6:30 p.m., shortly before the closing of the polling stations.
