The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the dismissal of Attorney General Pam Bondi, one of his closest collaborators, in an unexpected move within his Administration. The decision was publicly communicated through the social network Truth Social, where the president described Bondi as “great patriot” and “loyal friend”.
According to Trump himself, Bondi will leave the position to assume “a very necessary and important new position in the private sector”, whose destination will be announced soon. His interim replacement will be the current deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, whom the president defined as an “extremely talented and respected legal mind”.
The handover occurs after, according to Fox News, Trump personally communicated the dismissal to Bondi late Wednesday. The now former attorney general had held the position for the last year, after being appointed in January 2025 as part of the new presidential cabinet.
Various US media outlets had pointed out in the previous days a growing wear and tear in the relationship between Trump and Bondi, especially due to the handling of the case of Jeffrey Epstein. The partial publication of documents related to the case failed to close the controversy, which continues to generate criticism even within the president's own political circle.
Added to this context are several recent judicial setbacks for the Department of Justice, which failed to advance cases against figures such as the Attorney General of New York, Letitia James, nor against several Democratic legislators or the President of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, whom Trump had publicly singled out.
Bondi was Florida's attorney general and one of the first figures to endorse Trump within the Republican Party. For his part, Blanche has served as a lawyer for people close to the president, such as Rudy Giuliani, and for Trump himself in judicial cases such as the one related to actress Stormy Daniels, which reinforces his profile of utmost confidence within the new team.
