The Chief of Staff of the United States Army, General Randy George, has been relieved of his post with immediate effect by order of the Department of War in the midst of the war in Iran. The decision, executed by the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, represents an unexpected change in one of the key positions of the American military structure.

The announcement was confirmed by the department's spokesperson, Sean Parnell, who stated in a public message that “General Randy A. George will retire from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army with immediate effect.” George held this position since September 2023, after assuming responsibility for organizing and directing the country's ground forces.

The dismissal occurs amidst growing tensions within the high military command related to the management of the conflict in Iran. According to information published by media outlets such as CNN and CBS, George would have maintained disagreements with Hegseth and other Defense officials regarding strategic decision-making during the war escalation.

In addition to George's replacement, The Washington Post has reported other changes in the military leadership, including the departure of General David Hodne, head of the Transformation and Training Command, and of Major William Green, head of the Chaplain Corps, which points to a broader restructuring.

Randy George, career infantry officer, graduated in 1988 from the United States Military Academy at West Point and has held various positions of relevance, such as the command of I Corps at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He also served as principal military assistant to then Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin during the administration of Joe Biden.
