US President Donald Trump insisted this Wednesday that US control of Greenland is “vital” for national security and for the ambitious missile defense system he is promoting, known as the “Golden Dome”.

In a message posted on his social network, Truth, Trump stated that **the United States "needs Greenland"** **as part of its defense capabilities**, and argued that **NATO would be "much more formidable and effective"** if the Arctic island were under U.S. control. The president also asserted that a solution that does not involve the annexation of the territory is "unacceptable."

These statements come ahead of a White House meeting between U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland, intended to address tensions over the future of the self-governing Danish territory.

Tactics

Greenland occupies a strategic position in the Arctic due to its location, its potential natural resources, and the new shipping routes emerging with climate change, and it already hosts US military bases.

However, the authorities of **Denmark and Greenland have rejected the idea of the territory passing into American hands**, recalling the right to self-determination and Danish sovereignty over the island. The Greenlandic prime minister has reaffirmed that Greenland chooses to be with Denmark and within structures such as the **EU and NATO**, in contrast to Trump's needs.
