On Monday, August 17, Deportivo de la Coruña will host Elche in their return to the first division, in a great Monday duel. And finally, to close this strange first week of football, Atlético de Madrid will host newly promoted Málaga.
First matchday without Madrid or Barça
This first matchday will be very peculiar and atypical because we will not see all the League teams play the first weekend. The top teams in the competition such as Madrid or Barça will not play the first matchday with the rest of the teams. This is due to the World Cup that was played this summer. These teams had several players in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, so, due to the minimum vacation days that players have, they have had to join the clubs' pre-seasons later than the rest. For this reason, the League has decided that these teams will play their first match on August 25, 26, and 27. Real Madrid will begin its journey in the competition at home against Real Sociedad on the 26th, while Barça will do so on the 27th against Athletic Club at Camp Nou. Madrid wins the Teresa Herrera
While the league competition does not begin for the whites, friendlies are taking place in this pre-season. This Wednesday, Deportivo de la Coruña played against Real Madrid, playing for the Teresa Herrera trophy, a friendly competition cup organized by the Galicians for years.
