The round of 16 matches have all concluded, with beautiful knockout rounds, comebacks, and some surprises. Thus, the quarter-final bracket is now decided, leaving only 8 teams in the competition who, at this point, will fight to lift the cup.

This Tuesday, July 7, was the last round of 16 matches, leaving two memorable games. At 6:00 PM (Spanish time), Argentina faced Egypt. A priori, the match should have been a comfortable victory for the Argentinians; however, that was far from the reality of what the match was. In the first half, the script was clear: Argentine dominance with the ball, and Egypt defending and playing out or in transitions when they could. Everything seemed calm until, from a set piece, Egypt took a 1-0 lead.

From then on, Argentina besieged the opposing area with several chances, even enjoying a penalty; however, Messi could not convert it after a good save from the Egyptian goalkeeper, who was very inspired. After the missed penalty, the dominance continued, but without goals. The second half started the same, until at one point the match went crazy. In the 58th minute, Egypt executed a wonderful counter-attack, scoring the 0-2, but the goal was disallowed as the referee reviewed the VAR and signaled a controversial prior foul which nullified the goal. Despite Egyptian protests, they continued with their game, and in the 67th minute, they did score the 0-2 in a good play by Oviedo's winger Hassan.

Argentina found themselves against the ropes, as they had to come back from two goals down in 20 minutes. It seemed that the goals would not come, until in the 80th minute a header from Cuti Romero opened the scoring for Argentina. The goal lifted their spirits, and Messi in the 83rd managed to score the equalizer, marking his eighth goal in the World Cup. After this epic comeback, it seemed there would be extra time, but football had other plans. In the final stoppage time of the match, Enzo Fernández connected a great header into the back of the net to make it 3-2, and complete a comeback that is already World Cup history, leaving tears of sadness in the Egyptians, and emotion in the Argentinians.

On the other hand, at 10:00 PM, Colombia and Switzerland would play the last round of 16 match. The match promised to be very even, and without a doubt, it was. A match where great chances were scarce, as defenses stood out more than attacks, concluded in regular time, with a 0-0 score. Already in extra time, there were several chances for both teams, the clearest being a crossbar hit by the Colombians. But with this result, they went to penalties. In an agonizing shootout, Switzerland was more effective, scoring four penalties, one more than Colombia, which could only score three. This sent the Colombians home, who were having a great tournament, and qualified Switzerland for the quarterfinals, something they had not achieved since 1954.
