Real Madrid footballer Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a crime against road safety after driving under the influence of alcohol in the south of Gran Canaria. The center-back accepted a fine of 14,400 euros and the withdrawal of his driving license for eight months.

The events occurred at 6:30 AM on August 16 on the GC-1 highway, as it passes through San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Asencio was driving a Porsche Macan GTS when officers stopped him at a preventive checkpoint and he registered 0.90 mg/l of alcohol in exhaled air in the first test and 0.88 mg/l in the second. The general permitted limit is 0.25 mg/l.

The rate also exceeded the 0.60 mg/l threshold, above which driving under the influence of alcohol becomes a crime. The player admitted the facts three days later in a fast-track trial and accepted a four-month fine with a daily fee of 120 euros, in addition to being unable to drive for eight months. The intervention ended without any accident and a companion took charge of the vehicle.

The conviction has become known at an especially delicate time for the 23-year-old defender, who has not yet debuted this season due to a muscle injury. Just one day after it was made public, Asencio must appear before another court for a completely different and more serious case.

Another trial this Thursday

Courtroom number 5 of the Criminal Section of the Court of First Instance of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will begin this Thursday the trial against Asencio and three other former players from the Real Madrid youth academy. The sessions are scheduled for September 3, 4, and 7, and the four defendants have requested to testify by videoconference.

The Prosecutor's Office maintains that Asencio did not participate in the sexual encounter or in the recording of the images, but attributes to him having subsequently requested the video, receiving it on his phone, and showing it to a third party despite knowing that it had been obtained without permission. One of the two women who appeared in the recording was 16 years old. The procedure remains open and the player is subject to the presumption of innocence.

The two affected parties withdrew their private accusations after accepting Asencio's apologies and reaching an economic agreement whose amount remains confidential. The Prosecutor's Office currently maintains its request for two and a half years in prison for crimes against privacy, although it has shown willingness to withdraw it if the footballer apologizes during the hearing and the women ratify it before the judge. The trial will continue in any case against the other three former academy players, who also face an accusation for distribution of child pornography.
