Claude sneaks into Google and stands up to Gemini: it can now edit your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations

The battle to dominate artificial intelligence at work has just gone up a level. Anthropic has brought Claude directly into the heart of Google Workspace, allowing its AI assistant to work within Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The move has an obvious interpretation: Claude enters the territory that Google is trying to turn into the great showcase for Gemini, and it does so with a tool that allows editing files without having to jump between applications.

The integration, available in beta, is done through Claude for Google Workspace, an add-on that places the assistant in a sidebar next to the open document. Claude can read the content of the file and work on the selected text, cells, or slides. This way, the user can ask it to rewrite a paragraph, correct a heading, prepare a formula, or generate new slides without needing to copy the content and take it to another window.

Claude enters directly into Docs, Sheets, and Slides

In Google Docs, Claude can correct and reorganize texts, shorten content, or modify headings while respecting the document's format. The user can review each change before applying it, as modifications appear as proposals that must be approved. There is also an automatic acceptance mode for those who want to delegate longer tasks and allow Claude to execute instructions from start to finish.

In Google Sheets, the integration goes much further than writing a formula. Claude can clean data, create charts, add new tabs, and build pivot tables to organize information. In Google Slides, it can generate new slides while maintaining the presentation's visual style and detect problems such as overlapping elements or text that goes outside the margins.

The move is particularly striking because Google has in Gemini one of its big bets for the future of Workspace. The company has been integrating its own artificial intelligence into Docs, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides for some time, but now Claude can work directly on those same files. Anthropic does not need to create its own office suite: it installs itself within the one that millions of users already use daily.

From Claude's chat to Google files

Anthropic has also enabled connectors to work with Google files directly from Claude. The user can provide a Drive link or request the creation of a document, a spreadsheet, or a presentation from the conversation. In compatible configurations, the file appears next to the chat and retains the access permissions established in the Google account.

This also opens the door to more complex workflows. Claude can combine information stored in Google Drive with other connected tools and use it to prepare documents or presentations. In business environments, Anthropic also maintains specific administration, auditing, and security controls.

Google provides its office and Claude provides the AI

Anthropic's move has a clear consequence: the war between Claude and Gemini is no longer fought solely in chat. Now it is also disputed within the documents that millions of workers use every day.

For years, using AI at work meant copying text, opening the chatbot, asking for a response, and pasting it back into the document. Claude tries to eliminate precisely that step. And it does so by entering the home of one of its main rivals: Google provides the office and Anthropic places Claude inside in a move that once again shakes up the race to conquer the place where artificial intelligence is truly worked with. Because if anything the market is making clear in recent months is that the battle is no longer just about having the best model, but about getting it to be the AI we use every day.

And this may be just the beginning: the market points towards a scenario where we will see more and more alliances, integrations, and collaborations between AI companies, even among actors who today compete to become the industry benchmark.

This specific bet is significant because it turns the document itself into the place where interaction with AI occurs. It is no longer just about asking Claude what to do, but about asking it to do it directly on the file. And that's where the competition with Gemini can get really interesting.
