Google expands its catalog of sports devices with the Fitbit Edge, a wristband that seeks to position itself halfway between conventional activity trackers and more complete smartwatches. Its proposal brings together a lightweight design, integrated GPS, a color AMOLED screen, and sensors to monitor both exercise and rest.

The device can now be pre-ordered in Spain for 179.99 euros and its launch is scheduled for next October 27. In addition, those who buy it will receive three months of access to Google Health Premium, the subscription that allows the use of additional tracking and personalized advice functions.

An AMOLED screen in a lightweight body

The Fitbit Edge opts for an elongated and compact format, with a casing made of recycled aluminum and a weight of just 17.7 grams without a strap. Its 1.34-inch AMOLED screen allows you to check activity statistics, health metrics, and notifications directly from your wrist. It also incorporates a physical side button to facilitate access to certain functions during workouts.

The wristband will be available in four finishes: Obsidian black, Fog silver, Olive green, and Canyon gold. Google will also offer different interchangeable straps, with sports, textile, magnetic, and metallic options.

More than 50 sports and GPS without depending on the mobile

One of the main attractions of the Fitbit Edge is its training functions. The wristband allows you to record more than 50 sports modalities and incorporates automatic activity recognition. During exercise, it shows data such as pace, distance, heart rate, intensity zones, and estimated maximum oxygen consumption.

The integrated GPS allows you to record routes without carrying your phone. According to Google, the improvements introduced in the device increase tracking accuracy by up to 40% compared to previous generations. The altimeter also records elevation changes, a particularly useful function for running on slopes or training on stairs.

These features are complemented by tracking steps, calories, activity minutes, and cardiovascular load, as well as information aimed at evaluating recovery after exertion.

Sleep tracking, ECG, and health functions

The Fitbit Edge incorporates sensors to measure heart rate throughout the day, record skin temperature, and analyze sleep patterns. It also offers menstrual cycle tracking, blood oxygen measurement, and alerts related to high or low heart rate values.

Among its most notable features is the electrocardiogram (ECG) application, compatible with the evaluation of certain heart rhythm patterns. The device also provides additional health-related trends and indicators, although some features may depend on the country, usage requirements, or the availability of corresponding applications.

The experience is completed with Google Health Coach, an AI-powered assistant that interprets recorded trends and offers personalized recommendations on physical activity and habits. To access this tool, a subscription to Google Health Premium is required after the promotional period ends.

Up to seven days of battery life and water resistance

Another strong point of the wristband is its battery, which promises up to seven days of use on a single charge. According to the specifications provided, it can be fully recharged in about 90 minutes, while a five-minute charge provides up to a day of battery life under the conditions indicated by the manufacturer.

The Fitbit Edge has 5 ATM water resistance and IP68 certification, so it is ready to accompany the user in aquatic activities such as swimming, within the limits established by Google. In terms of connectivity, it integrates Bluetooth 5.4, call and message notifications, quick replies, multimedia controls, alarms, and timers. It is also compatible with Android 11 or later phones and iPhones using iOS 16.4 or later.

Price and launch date in Spain

The Google Fitbit Edge costs 179.99 euros and can now be pre-ordered through the Google Store and associated distributors. Its market arrival is scheduled for October 27. The purchase includes three months of Google Health Premium, a particularly relevant advantage for those who want to try the AI-powered coaching features.

With this bracelet, Google is betting on a device focused on sports and health, but with some connected functions typical of a smartwatch. Its interest will be in checking to what extent these features justify the price compared to more economical activity trackers and the company's own smartwatches.
