Apple's first foldable iPhone "is already in Spain," but getting one on launch day will not be an easy task. The iPhone Duo went on sale this Friday, October 23, after reservations sold out in a matter of minutes. Those who try to buy it now through Apple's website will have to wait, according to the announced deadlines, until January 25, 2027, to receive it.
The anticipation has been such that dozens of people have queued in front of official stores to try to get one of the few available units. Although Apple has reserved some devices for in-person sales, the company warns that stock will be limited and could sell out quickly. The high demand and the difficulties in manufacturing a phone with this design explain part of the initial scarcity.
How much does the first foldable iPhone cost?
The price also does not go unnoticed. The iPhone Duo starts at 2,339 euros for the 256 GB version. The 512 GB model costs 2,589 euros, while the 1 TB and 2 TB options amount to 3,089 and 3,839 euros, respectively. It is available in two finishes: stellar white and night sky.
Despite its high cost, the device sold out initial reservations before officially reaching stores. Apple attributes the situation to extraordinary demand and assures that it is working to accelerate deliveries. For now, it has not communicated how many units have been reserved or when availability will normalize.
A 7.6-inch screen that folds to fit in your pocket
The main novelty of the iPhone Duo is its design. Closed, it incorporates a 5.4-inch external screen that allows it to be used like any other mobile phone. When opened, a 7.6-inch internal screen unfolds, designed for watching videos, reading documents, or working with more space.
The format also allows for better use of applications. With Split View, the user can keep two open at the same time, consult a web page while taking notes, or reply to messages without constantly switching windows. In addition, the phone can be placed partially open on a surface to make video calls or play content without holding it with your hands.
Its cameras allow you to take selfies with the quality of the rear camera
The photographic system is another element with which Apple seeks to differentiate its first foldable. The device incorporates two 48-megapixel Fusion rear cameras and allows the external screen to be used as a preview for taking selfies with them.
Its functions include Duo Preview, which makes it easy to check how each person appears before taking a photograph, and Smart Capture, designed to improve group photos. The phone also integrates a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera for video calls and self-portraits.
The Apple Pencil also comes to the iPhone
The iPhone Duo opens up another possibility until now reserved for other Apple devices: using the Apple Pencil with USB-C. Its internal screen offers space to write, draw or make annotations, although this function will be available through a software update scheduled for October 26.
Inside, the phone incorporates the A20 Pro chip and a battery that offers up to 31 hours of video playback using the internal screen, according to Apple's figures. The company also highlights its titanium structure and a hinge designed to support the foldable mechanism.
Reservations are sold out, but there may still be units in stores
The lack of stock does not mean that it is impossible to buy the iPhone Duo this Friday. Apple has confirmed that its Spanish physical stores will have limited units for those who come without a reservation, although it does not guarantee that there will be enough for all interested parties.
The manufacturing complexity of a foldable phone, especially due to the hinge and the flexible screen, limits the speed with which new units can be produced. Meanwhile, those who do not get one during the launch will have to resort to online orders and check if delivery dates are brought forward.
The iPhone Duo thus debuts amidst queues, sold-out reservations and weeks of waiting. Its price places it among Apple's most expensive devices, but its combination of a foldable screen, multitasking and new photographic functions makes it one of the most anticipated technological launches of the year.
