Thousands of people belonging to the Catalan educational community demonstrated this weekend through the streets of Barcelona to demand greater investment in public education. The mobilization, which brought together teachers, families, and students, marched through the city center under the slogan “Let's stop the social and educational emergency.”
The march started from the Jardinets de Gràcia and concluded in Plaça de Catalunya, where participants demanded the need to strengthen resources allocated to public education and improve the conditions of educational centers. The call was supported by several educational unions and family associations.
The protest occurred a few days after the teaching staff overwhelmingly rejected the pre-agreement reached between the Department of Education and several unions. In the consultation held among professionals in the sector, the negative vote clearly prevailed, reflecting the existing discontent in a significant part of the educational community.
The demonstration caps off a school year marked by labor conflict and mobilizations in classrooms. Since February, numerous strike days and territorial protests have taken place to denounce the lack of resources and demand improvements in the working conditions of teachers.
The unions and groups promoting the mobilizations are already preparing the strategy for the next academic year. The convening organizations will meet in the coming days to define new protest actions and evaluate future protests with the aim of maintaining pressure on the educational administration.
