Madrid Emergency services attended to 323 people this Sunday during the multitudinous Corpus Christi mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV in Cibeles square. Despite the enormous influx of faithful, none of the assists were serious and only nine people had to be transferred to hospital centers.

According to data provided by Emergencias Madrid, more than half of the interventions were related to dizziness, fainting, and heatstroke caused by the high temperatures recorded during the day. Minor injuries, falls, and several episodes of anxiety were also attended to.

Among the registered cases, that of 15 pilgrims staying in a Madrid school who suffered food poisoning stands out. Two of them were transferred to Ramón y Cajal Hospital to receive medical attention, although their condition did not present significant complications.

To guarantee the health safety of the event, Samur-Protección Civil deployed five Advanced Medical Posts distributed at different points in the center of Madrid. The operation was designed to respond to a massive concentration that, according to the organizers, brought together 1.2 million people, although the Government Delegation lowered the figure to 1.1 million.

The influx exceeded the capacity of Cibeles square, which forced thousands of attendees to follow the ceremony from giant screens installed in the surroundings. Many faithful were also unable to receive communion in the main enclosure and were referred to nearby parishes enabled for the occasion.

After the Eucharist, the day concluded with a historic Corpus Christi procession led by Leo XIV. The Pontiff walked along Alcalá street with the Blessed Sacrament on a spectacular floral carpet made with more than 30,000 carnations, leaving one of the most symbolic images of his visit to Spain.
