The Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, appeared this Monday in the Senate within the framework of the investigation committee on the blackout of April 28, 2025, with the aim of providing explanations about the causes and management of one of the largest electrical incidents recorded in Spain in recent years.
During his/her intervention, Aagesen has defended the response of the Executive and of the operators of the electrical system, assuring that action was taken according to the foreseen protocols. “Action was taken in accordance with the established procedures and with the utmost diligence,” he/she pointed out, while emphasizing that the supply was restored “in the shortest possible time given the circumstances.”
The minister has insisted that, after the incident, the Government has adopted measures to strengthen the electricity grid and improve its response capacity in situations of stress. In this regard, she has stated that the objective is “to ensure that an episode of these characteristics does not happen again” and increase the resilience of the system in a context of energy transition.
Parliamentary groups have focused their interventions on clarifying the origin of the failure, reaction times, and possible responsibilities. From the opposition, greater transparency has been demanded, while the Government has defended its management. Aagesen has acknowledged that the episode forces “to continue reinforcing prevention and response mechanisms” in an increasingly complex system.
