The president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, has called the Government's decision to guarantee public healthcare to immigrants in an irregular administrative situation a “crime”. In statements to the media during his presence in the Leonese municipality of Astorga, to participate in the electoral campaign of Castilla y León, the leader of the party has criticized the measure after the approval of a royal decree that reinforces the access to the healthcare system for these people.
Abascal maintained that opening the healthcare system to undocumented immigrants entails, in his opinion, a detriment for Spanish citizens and for the sustainability of the public health system. In his statements, the leader of Vox lashed out at the Executive for promoting this initiative.
The criticisms come after the Council of Ministers approved a royal decree aimed at guaranteeing public healthcare to irregular migrant people throughout Spanish territory. The Government defends that the norm seeks to ensure universal healthcare and avoid inequalities in access to health services.
From the Executive they maintain that the measure aims to reinforce the universal character of the National Health System and guarantee that any person can receive medical attention, regardless of their administrative situation. The decree also seeks to unify criteria among autonomous communities and avoid differences in healthcare.
